Why so quiet around here?

This blog has been badly neglected and become somewhat stale over the last several weeks.

If there are still any followers or readers out there, I thought I should maybe explain why. But before I do that I should maybe start with a story. Quite awhile ago I was lucky enough to land a job with a company that supplied MRO supplies in the mid-west. I was not qualified for this job and only got it because I was lucky enough to know someone who was in a position to put in a good word for me. While there, I learned a lot about myself and learned some principles that I still use. There was a small group of us that would meet at lunch time and go running to then justify the lunch stop at McDonalds. It was the hours spent on the track and over a Quarter-pounder with cheese that the principle of 'next step' really sank in. We would talk about what was going on in our lives currently both good and bad and every conversation then shifted to - so what is your next step? And then what are you doing about it?

For many years my next step was to get my master degree. Which of course I kicked that can down the street because of many reasons, having children, finances, etc. Well that next step is finally happening. I have enrolled at Augsburg College and am thus far two classes down am making progress. Because of this new world of studying like crazy, writing papers and making time for team projects, this blog has and probably will continue to take a hit. I will attempt to post and link to things that interest me as time goes by, but it will be at a much slower pace then it has been in the past. I leave you with my favorite phrase from 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' that I often refer to.......

Wikipedia is such an awesome tool. It even houses a great list of common misconceptions that is nicely broke out by type and time period.

To awesome not to share....

It seems that scientists feel that they may know how dinosaurs died out. The fact is that it may have been global warming during that time. Which in and of itself isn't that exciting. However, what they think may have been the generator and what caused the warming to speed up is what makes this story extra awesome. That is FARTS!

Read the whole story here and try not to smile too big.....

Texting shouldn't be combined....

With other tasks. We understand that walking and texting can cause you to walk into others, walls, and doors and other embarrassing situations. I believe that most of us also understand that driving and texting is a really horrible idea. This should be especially true when driving a PLANE with a lot of people on it!!!!! Check out the story here.

So that is where it comes from....

The Dr. Suess book - If I Ran the Zoo, published in 1950, is the first recorded instance of the word “nerd”.

The rules for flower buying....

Who knew there was so much meaning behind how many roses you purchase? It seems that there is - no wonder many guys get paralyzed when thinking about relational things.... it is just so confusing.

For example - a single rose on a first date symbolizes love at first sight, 6 roses symbolizes infatuation, 13 roses means you will be someone's friend forever. Get the full list and breakdown here.

Reflecting

There are few things that cause me to reflect more then pictures. This is an incredibly moving post with some images that occurred during this year.

A few that moved me deeply were:
The dog what wouldn't leave the side of his master.

The images from the tsunami that hit Japan

The national security team getting an update on the Osama bin Laden mission

A before and after image of Joplin, Missouri

Penmanship matters

Even in this day of computers and most of our communication being typed, handwriting matters. Even if you are wanting to get into a life of crime. This guy is going to harassed when he is behind bars.

Things change - must be quick not sticky

It is interesting how things change over time. When I first started working with websites the mantra was that your site had to be 'sticky' you wanted to hold the user's attention as long as you could in order to try and 'sell' them more information, stuff, or display more ads. This is why so many sites break articles up into multiple pages and other tricks to force the user to see more ads.

However technology has changed how we interact with digital information. Individuals are more likely to be accessing information via mobile devices and have no patience for slowness or delay tactics. We want information fast and we want it now.

This means that the way that success is measured must also change. No longer is success to hold captive an individual, but you must have something worthwhile for that individual to return over and over.

Ultimately, it comes down to having something of interest that people want to find out more about it or want to continue to engage with it.

iPhone 5 is even causing Twitter to ramp up

It seems that there are quite a few people who are excited about the upcoming iPhone 5 so much so that even Twitter is ramping up to be able to handle the load.

We know that the event is happening this next Tuesday, and I for one am giddy to see what kind of rainbow and unicorn type device will be released as well as how Mr. Cook does presenting.

New layouts for Blogger

It seems sometimes that Blogger tends to lag behind WordPress a little bit in being able to do different things to customize your blog. However when they introduced the Template editor and the easy ways to upload your own backgrounds and tweak your layouts, it really improved Blogger as the easy to use, but really powerful blogging solution. Now with the release of the new layouts on Blogger, this has moved to even greater hights. I love the different ways that you are able to display your content and allow your readers the ability to 'play' with the layout as well. You can read more about the new layouts here.
Or watch this:

There aren't any abilities to tweak the default settings on the new layout, but as they have just been released, I am sure that more updates will be following.

What is Apple worth....

This is such a great site. It goes through and lists the various things that Apple is worth more then. The most surprising one to me was the fact that Apple is worth more then all of the illegal drugs (380 billion vs 321 billion) in the world!

Check it out for more examples.

Want to know how it felt?

Saw this link on Gizmodo. A guy giving a discription of a car crash. Best part for me, after all of the description and sound effects....  the line "reality hits you hard bro."

Social Media and it's impact around the world

I saw this linked to from TechCrunch, and usually when a presentation is over about 20 slides I just ignore it. This presentation was one that sucked me in. There is so much great information that is presented in here. If you do anything with or around social media this is great information. Even if it is just to compare how you are doing in relation to the rest of the world. Check it out:
