Visual Search: oSkope

With Google pretty much owning the world on search and Yahoo and MSN picking up anyone else it is amazing that people keep trying to build new search tools. It is cool that they do because I think fundamentally as we are all different people, we are all going to use different methods more effectively to find what we need. Enter oSkope. They are visual search company. They have built in searches for Amazon.com, Ebay, Flickr & Youtube. Which if you think about it is a big portion of web searching.

I tried the Amazon search and it started out by displaying the top selling book titles. I could then look at them differently - viewing them as a grid, stack, pile, list or graph. Then I could easily narrow down if I wanted a country specific Amazon, or even the type of item - book, DVD, music, etc. that I wanted to look at. By clicking on a specific title I got a pop-out menu that told a little bit about the book and allowed me to go right to the page for that item.
It was a lot of fun to 'throw' around books and trying different configurations to see the 'data' differently.

There was also a search box if I wanted to narrow or look for something specifically. In all it was a great way to search and made it feel a little more 'real life' in the way that you would search for something on your desk or something. There was also a zoom in and out feature that was really cool.

Loved it!
