Book review: Bright Shiny Morning

This book is the return of James Frey, the man behind the mess that surrounded his jaw dropping book 'Million Little Pieces'. Which even if a good portion was made up, was a fascinating read and really made me feel like I was in the mind of someone trying to break an addiction.

Bright Shiny Morning is a big book. It is an ode to the city of Los Angeles. As you move through the book you get little glimpses of characters that make up the city, from a star actor to a homeless man on the boardwalk. This glimpses make up only a page or two and then jump to another story. Sometimes the characters return later, sometimes they don't. The stories don't really intermingle and they don't wrap up nicely. It is sprawling and tangled stories that are told. Kind of like the city itself.

In between all of the snippets of story there are little facts about how LA came to be the mammoth city that it is today. And it helps you gain an appreciation for what it is.

When you start to read this book, make sure you have plenty of time because once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down. This is an amazing return for an author who caught a lot of flack and I am quite surprised even bothered to write any more. Check it out. It will leave you awed. It will leave you breathless. It will hold your attention. It will make you think.

I do not care what the critics say; James Frey has a huge hit with Bright Shiny Morning, as he did with MLP's and MFL. The great critics are a bit jealous that James hit the new age novel on the head and now they can only bash him, saying "James Frey is a failed memoirist who needs to learn how to write a true novel before he reinvents it". Here is a though he has reinvented it and you can only wish you would have don it first. Moving, Spectacular, Amazing! James you are already an icon!
