We went to see Rob Bell last weekend for his 'Drops like stars' tour. The measure of anything for me is not just how it makes you feel during an event but how much you reflect and take with you days later. That being said - this was a pretty powerful night.
The idea behind Drops like Stars is an examination between suffering and creativity. But there were so many different things that occurred that night. Both from the presentation but also from the moments of crowd interaction.
Some of the ideas that really resonated with me:
Life is often full of unresolved stories. We all want the 'Hollywood' ending, reality isn't like that.
Ache is universal - there was a moment of interaction where everyone wrote on a card with their non-writing hand 'I know how you feel'. Then we were to hold up our cards if we had ever lost someone to cancer then trade our cards with them, if we had ever stared at a pile of bills and not known how to pay them, and other sorts of moments in life. As I write this I am looking at the card with 'I know how you feel' written on it. It was written but someone who I don't know, probably won't ever meet again, but yet I feel a strange connection too.
Another great moment was using soap bars to illustrate that there is something powerful in all of us - and around all of us, it is just up to you to release it.
And there was so much more.
I would highly recommend checking out to see if the tour is coming to your area. If it is, and even if it isn't, pick up up a copy of the Drops Like Stars book. It is an amazing piece of art in an of itself.
