Doing the right thing

We love to hear of stories about how people persevered and overcame obstacles in order to achieve great things. Stories about how people did the right thing even when it cost them dearly, are also ones that we tend to gravitate towards. Here is a story that is about just that, doing the right thing even though it costs. And it is in a field where self-sacrifice is sometimes a rarity, especially around money. That is professional sports.

Gil Meche, who was signed to a guaranteed free-agent contract and then ran into health issues is going to retire instead of just sit on the team and get 12 million that is 'owed' to him based on his contract. That is a pretty big paycheck to walk away from! But he is doing it because it is the right thing to do.

That is a story that should be celebrated.
