I was able to watch the entire conversation that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had at the D5 conference. You can get it as a podcast via iTunes. It is well worth your time.
It was great to hear about their history together and where they saw computing going. Bill was much more apt to talk about that then Steve. But the best part was towards the end during the Q & A time that someone asked the question, 'What does it take to succeed?'
To paraphrase what Steve said, there are two things that will make you a success.
The first thing you must have is passion for what you do. Because everything that you do is so hard, success will come from passion. Passion is what will get you through when any sane person would quit. Look at people who are considered by society as successes, they are all people who persevered when others gave up.
The second thing that you must do is to surround yourself with smart people. You have to be around people who are smarter then you.
I totally believe what Steve said. These are great words. Hear them, live them.
